Protest in Oslo against the Awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the EU

Some 50 organizations called for an action in Oslo on December 9, 2012 to protest the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union. About a thousand people came. Comrades of the Marxist-Leninist Organization Revolution (Revolusjon) of Norway and KPml of Norway took part. The International Conference of Marxist-Leninist Parties and Organizations (ICMLPO) has published a statement about this:

A Nobel Prize for the EU? An Insult to the People of Europe and the Whole World!

The European Union (EU) is not a peace project. The EU is not a "Europe of the peoples". The EU is and always has been a Europe of the monopolies.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee without limit to make a scandal of the Nobel Prize and distort the will of Nobel to an extent that causes head-shaking and dismay worldwide and in Norway. Under the leadership of the former head of the Norwegian Labor Party and current Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, the committee is already to blame for awarding the prize to the U.S. warmonger President Obama. And now the EU! Will NATO’s turn be next? The ostensible reason for awarding the prize to the EU is that "the EU and its predecessors have contributed to promoting peace, reconciliation, democracy and human rights for more than six decades." This is like spitting in the face of the people of Europe. What “human rights"? More than 25 million people in the European Union are affected by mass unemployment. Half of the young people are without work. Countries like Greece and Spain are ruined by cuts in social services and the most extreme poverty, with the prospect of even worse attacks in the future. The "national" governments in the most crisis-ridden member-states have become administrative authorities. They are threatened and directed by the troika – the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund – to cut education, pensions and health care and to cut wages to the bone. The EU is supposed to have created "peace" in the Balkans. We are speaking of the same EU, with Germany as an active mastermind, stirred up and provoked the civil war in Yugoslavia in the 1990s! Since then we have seen France and Britain in particular, as well as other European powers, as the chief aggressors in the bombing of Libya in 2011. Now, they are use similar rhetorical threats against Syria.

The Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee is ridiculing the European workers and peoples, including the people of Norway, who voted twice against joining the European Union. But it is also ridiculing the people and workers of the whole world. Since its beginning in the 1950s the European Union has been an imperialist project in U.S. imperialism’s so-called "cold war" for world domination. Likewise, the EU was from the beginning a project to strengthen the European imperialist powers, especially Germany. Using the EU, German imperialism has tried to gain renewed influence and power after it had been defeated in World War II by the Red Army and the Allies. This strategy was successful. Today Germany dominates Europe in an aggressive manner. At the same time, the EU supported Britain and France in their neo-colonial wars in Indochina, Africa and Latin America.

The Europe of the monopolies is an imperialist creation with two possible results. Either there will be a "successful" imperialist union under German leadership that exploits the workers in Europe and worldwide and makes war against states and peoples. Or the contradictions among the member states and the capitalist groups of the Union will lead to a break-up, to trade wars and possibly to open war among the great powers themselves.

Whatever the result, the EU is anything but a peace project. Therefore, we denounce the decision of the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee. We support the protests on December 9, 2012, in Oslo, organized by "No to the EU" and the peace movement in that country.

Lenin said: "From the standpoint of the economic conditions of imperialism – i.e., the export of capital and the division of the world by the "advanced" and "civilized" colonial powers – a United States of Europe, under capitalism, is either impossible or reactionary." (Lenin: On the Slogan for a United States of Europe, Vol. 21, p. 341, English edition.)
